Sihanoukville - Things To Do
Kbal Chai Waterfall
Situated just a few kilometres out of town and easily accessible via moto or car the Kbal Chai waterfalls offer an interesting half-day excursion from Sihanoukville. Best viewed during the wet season if you want to see them in full flow, during the dry season it is possible to relax in the pools under the refreshing flow of water. A very popular and busy destination on Khmer holidays and weekends so it is recommended to visit on a weekday if you want to have some peace and quiet. There are numerous eating shacks serving many varied if somewhat over-priced dishes once you have finished viewing the falls themselves. Reached by heading out of town on the main road Route 4 and after 5 minutes you will climb a hill. At the top of the hill is the small sign pointing to the left down a red dirt track. Follow the track for 10 - 15 minutes to reach the falls. Entrance is $1 for a foreigner and 1000 Riel for a Khmer paid at the roadblock a kilometre before the falls. There is free parking available and also 2000 riel guarded parking for motos.
Ream National Park And Beaches
Ream National Park was designated in 1993 and encompasses a total of 210 square kilometres of varied habitats including the islands of Koh Thmei and Koh Ses, numerous beaches, mangrove swamps, jungles, rivers and marine enviroments. The park supports over 150 species of birds and has a large monkey population. Tales of tiger sightings seem rather far-fetched and although Cambodia did once have a large tiger population it is now presumed that they all have sadly been hunted to extinction.
The entrance to Ream National Park is situated 18 kilometres from Sihanokville. Head out of town on Route 4 until you come to the airport on your right. Turn right and the Park Ranger Headquarters are just after the airport entrance on the lefthand side. If you continue down the main road you come to some beaches that are set around Ream Bay and a number of beachside restaurants offering fresh seafood and cheap cans of beer.
Currently accommodation options are limited although there is a bungalow operation on the largest island Koh Thmei and on the mainland on the shores of Ream Bay is the new Ream Beach Guesthouse.
Most guesthouses and travel agents will arrange day tours to the park including walking tours and boat trips. Typical costs are $ 20.00 including travel to the park, lunch, a boat trip, walking tour and return trip to Sihanoukville. All this can be arranged in person at the Ranger Station if you have your own transport although you will need a group to keep prices down as renting a whole boat with guide costs $ 45.00 for a trip for up to 5 people and guided walks costs $ 4 to $ 8 depending on length.
